Rev Newport served as pastor for Cedar Hill Church, and First Baptist Church LaFollette. In the agreement Pastor Newport would serve three-fourths of his time at LaFollette, and one-fourth time at Cedar Hill.

Rev J. M. Newport is mentioned in the history of Bell County, Kentucky. When Fonde Baptist Church was organized in 1910. The organization was effected by Rev. C. H. Otie and Rev. J. M. Newport and others acting as a committee on organization, using Pendleton's Articles of Faith and Church Covenant. The area of Fonde, and Pruden were mining communities, and Rev Newport was involved in teaching as well as preaching in this area.
