Harlan Reynolds, after twelve years of faithful service, retired to
their home in Old Hickory, Tennessee, March 29, 1987.
After over two years
under an interim pastor, the church called Bob Brown as pastor in
September 1989. The parsonage was renovated before the Browns
moved to LaFollette.
David Bailes, Minister of
Music and Youth, resigned in July 1991, to go to a church in
Mathews, North Carolina.
In November 1991, the
church elected and called Emory Riley as Minister of Music and
Education to begin serving in January 1992.
The old pipe organ had
been rebuilt once and finally was in such a shape that it could not
be repaired. A committee, headed by Terry Ratcliff, assisted by
Betty Ruth Dunham, Emory Riley and others, after much research,
recommended that a new organ be built by a firm in Morristown.
Estimated cost was $82,458.00 that was to be paid in installments
while it was being built in Morristown. It was finally
completed and installed in early 1994. It was recommended before
installment that additional pipes be added at a cost of $5,000.00.
The organ was dedicated
on April 24, 1994, with Dianne Bailes having been invited back to
give a recital that day.
Rev. Bob Brown resigned
in March 1994 to pastor a church in Maryville, Tennessee.
In May 1995 three houses
and lots at the end of the 300 West Central were purchased for
$85,000.00. These houses were vacated and torn down with the idea of
making a parking lot for the church later.
A group went on a mission
trip to Romania in the summer of 1995 accompanied by our new youth
director Joe Samples.
The church voted December
3, 1995 to call Dr. Carroll Golden as pastor. The Golden's moved in
the parsonage in January 1996.
A group led by Wesley
Caldwell went to Romania in July 1996, to help with the building of
a church. Money had been given by various members to buy
bricks for this.
The Church parsonage was
sold in January 1997, to Pastor and Mrs. Golden for $91,000.00. The
church used the money to pay off all debts.
In August 1997, a
Building Proposal Committee was elected to propose plans for a new
Educational and Family Life Center. This committee was: Tom
Wallace, Chairman, Tommy Norman, George Clawson, Arnold Ray Poteet,
Judy Rice, Linda Price, Bob DeJong, Art Gray.
In August 1996 Tom
Wallace presented the drawings for the new building which were to be
displayed in the halls of the present Educational Building.
In September 1998 David
Bales made a motion for the committee to continue and do a study for
cost estimates.
In November 1998 the
following people were recommended to serve on the Fund Raising
Committee: Don Messer, Chairman, Tommy Norman, David Craig, Jackie
DeJonge, Gail Roy, David Cooper.
At the same meeting the
Building and Grounds Committee of the church reported that the Jerry
Farmers were willing to sell their property for $83,000.00 and the
committee recommended we buy the property.
The Building Committee of
the Family Life Center reported that they recommend that the church
proceed with the building of the Family Life Center, cost not to
exceed $8000,000.00. David Bales seconded the motion.. The following
Sunday the church voted by secret ballot - 141 ayes 14 nays.
In May 1998, Tommy Norman
recommended we hire Dr. Archer Thorpe of Tennessee Baptist
Convention as a consultant for a fee of $9,975.00. This would be for
a three year period, which would include programs planning, training
, promotional material, visits to solicit commitments and banquet.
This was seconded by Bob DeJong. Motion carried.
This Building For
Tomorrow Program was begun in September 1999. On October 31, 1999, a
church-wide banquet was held at 6:00 PM at the Campbell County
Comprehensive High School at which time it was announced that over
$200.000.00 pre-commitments had been made. Dr. Bob Brown, former
pastor, was the speaker.
In the meantime Dr.
Golden had resigned as pastor in September 1998, to go into the
International Mission Program. They were to go to Costa Rica
for language study for one year. Then from there go to Mexico in
late 1999.
The church called Dr. Ken
Faught as Interim Pastor in November 1999.
The church voted January
30, 2000 to call Lane Harris as pastor. He became pastor March 5,
2000 |
