FROM YOUR PASTOR’S DESK
The following is taken from a speech to the Constitutional Convention June 2S 1757 by Benjamin Franklin0
“Mr Presdent the small progress we’ve made after four or five weeks...is proof of the imperfection of human understanding. 4tWe seem to feel our want of Polictical Wisdom since w&ve been running all about in search for it. We have lokd to Ancient governmerts which no longer exist0 And we’ve viewed mo .ern states in Europe- but find none suitable to our needs. In this situation groping in the dark for political truth, and hardly .cls to recognize it when we see it, how has it happened sir, that we have nct once thought of appealing to the Father of lights to ji luminate our understanding.
“In the beginning of our struggle with Bri tam, when we were sensible to danger, we had daily prayer in this room for Divine Protec tion, All of us must be aware of a super’ intending Providence looking over us, Our prayers were heard and graciously answered. Have we so soon forgotten our Powerful Friend? - Or do we imagine we no longer need his assistence? The longer I live, the more convinced I am that God governs in the affairs of men, and. if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it Pro’ bable that an Empire can rise without His Aid? We have been assured in the sacred writings that ‘except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it,’t
,,I therefore move, that henceforth prayer imploring the assistence of heaven and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the clergy of this city be requested to officiate in that service.,.”
See you Sunday Bible in hand.
